Keep It Simple: How I Mix My 909 Drums for House and Techno

I recently got asked to do a tutorial on mixing, so I wanted to break down exactly how I mixed the drums for my harder sounding dance music.
My philosophy on mixing is simple: No jargon, no over-processing, and no over-thinking.
The 10 Painters Analogy If you line up 10 painters in front of the exact same landscape, giving them the exact same brushes and paint, they will all come up with a completely different painting. Mixing is the same. There is no single "right" or "wrong" way to do it. This is the method that works for me, gets my tracks signed, and gets them out into the world.
If you're tired of spending hours agonizing over EQs and breaking your creative momentum, here is my fast, effective workflow for mixing club-ready drums.
The Drum Lineup
The drum group for this track consists of six straightforward elements. Five of them are classic Roland 909 sounds, with one deliberate exception:
The Kick (Ableton Stock)
The Ride (909)
The Open/Closed Hats (909)
The Clap (909)
The Snare (909)
The Crash (909)
1. The Kick (The Foundation)
While everything else is a 909, I didn't use a 909 kick here. I wanted something much beefier to drive the track, so I opted for an Ableton stock sample called FE2 Kick 4. Raw, it sounds completely flat, but a little processing gives it that bouncing punch.
EQ8: I didn’t use a drastic high-pass curve at the very bottom like a lot of producers do. Instead, I boosted around 45 Hz for weight, made a gentle dip in the low-mids (band 3) to create a pocket for other sounds, and slightly raised the top end to add a bit of space and resonance so the kick never sounds dull.
Compression: I loaded up a fantastic free compressor by Klanghelm. I didn't smash it; I just turned the makeup gain up a tiny fraction above zero to give it the exact loudness and presence I needed.
2. The 909 Ride
The 909 ride is played with full attack—it hits hard, almost like a crash, with a lot of natural decay.
EQ8: I turned off bands 1 and 2 entirely. I brought band 3 down to around 400 Hz to clean it up without losing that beautiful, echoey spaciness and natural decay.
The Sidechain Trick: To keep the mix clean during the busy sections (like when the acid line comes in), I sidechained the ride to a muted ghost kick. This gives the ride a rhythmic dip that breathes with the track.
Panning & Effects: Left completely centered, with a healthy amount of Reverb dialed in via the aux sends.
3. The Hi-Hats
I have two closed hats and one open hat sharing the same channel to keep things organized.
EQ8: I cut out the low end completely by turning off band 1 and curving band 2 upward. Then, I boosted band 4 to draw out that signature 909 crispness and brightness. Without this boost, raw 909 hats can sound dead and dull.
Effects: Sent to the Reverb return track to give them some room.
4. The Clap & Snare (Stereo Balancing)
The clap and snare drive the mid-range energy, and I use a specific panning strategy to create instant stereo width.
The 909 Clap: I filtered out the bottom end, raised band 3 to around 1.47 kHz, and boosted band 4 at 2.60 kHz to brighten the top. I then panned the clap to 11 o’clock (Left) and sent it to a Reverb bus.
The 909 Snare: I cut the low end below 20 Hz, boosted the mid-range (band 3), and bumped up band 4 to capture that classic, fizzy snare punch. I panned the snare to 1 o’clock (Right).
The Result: By panning the clap slightly left and the snare slightly right, they stay out of each other's way, opening up the center of the mix. (Note: The snare has enough natural echo and decay on its own, so I didn't add any extra reverb to it).
5. The Crash
The crash is the simplest part of the mix. For some reason, I used FabFilter Pro-Q on this channel instead of Ableton's EQ8, but the process is exactly the same.
EQ: I cut hard across the entire bottom end to remove all the unwanted, muddy frequencies that ruin a mix. Then, I raised the top end to keep it clear and crisp.
Effects: I panned it slightly and sent it to both the Delay and Reverb return tracks to let it wash out beautifully.
6. The Drum Bus & Gain Staging
Once the individual channels were set, I grouped all six tracks together to glue them into a cohesive kit.
Bus Compression: I added another compressor to the group channel, turning the makeup gain up to about 4 or 5, and setting the compression strength to 6.
Bus EQ: I applied a very subtle "smile" EQ curve on the group, slightly lifting the bottom end for warmth and the top end for clarity.
The Headroom Rule: Finally, I dropped the entire drum group utility to -6 dB. This ensures that when the track is bounced, there is plenty of clean headroom left for the mastering engineer to do their job.
Summary: Stop Agonizing, Start Releasing
You do not need massive plugin chains or hours of agonizing over micro-EQ cuts to make your drums hit hard. Over-processing kills your creative momentum, stalls your workflow, and ultimately stops you from finishing music.
Keep your mixdowns basic, give your elements power, use a little bit of strategic panning, and trust your ears!
