Nobody Cares About Your Music

Sounds like a weird thing for a music mentor to say, but let me explain before you explode into a rage and never use my services again.

Now in this day and age and as I write this in March 2024, the internet has to deal with over 100k new songs per day on Spotify etc.

When you consider that gigantic figure and put your song in there too, is it any wonder that so many potentially great songs drown in the sea of the upload swill of cyber space? You see the truth is nobody cares about much anymore when it comes to the arts. Back before #Spotify and streaming began and even way before the likes of #limewire existed. We music consumers relied on the music press and the radio for our new songs and albums etc before the physical copies hit the stores.

The only thing we got were full page adverts in magazines and newspapers such as Q and the NME. For dance music producers and DJ's we relied on Mixmag and DJ magazine to give us our monthly record reviews and club listings so we could travel to see our favourtie DJ's play and get to hear the exclusive white label promos that they would play in advance of release.

The point I am making is we have never had it so good and so bad at the same time with music consumption. We are swamped daily with new music and so many genres we don't know where to turn or what to pick anymore?

Now whereabouts does not caring come into it? Well it is all about promotion and how that standard adverts no longer captivate us or encourage us to buy into something unless it is a band or artist we loved before the internet age began.

So for example for me, if a new album comes out by the #petshopboys I will regardless of the media delivered to me will check it out as they have been a life long interest for me. But in today's mostly independent music world, artists have an incredibly difficult time promoting and getting their music heard.

So what do we do? Well that is the million dollar question. It is no longer good enough to just upload your artwork to your social media and announce that you have a new single out. Nor is it acceptable to do a short video where you stand there and tell the camera you have a new song coming out on all digital platforms next week.

That is the reason that nobody cares anymore. The flat basic promotion of having a new song out will not wash anymore with today's world.

So what do you do as an artist striving for attention of your new and probably brilliant song/album?

Well the answer is varied. You have to capture your audience within seconds and as our attention spans have shrank, we have around 3 seconds to draw them in.

So you need to be creative and think of ways to shine above everyone else.

So below are a few ideas of how to captivate your audience and also those random people who are scrolling on social media who happen to just stumble upon your video.

FILM A VIDEO AT A POPULAR LOCAL LANDMARK

OR FILM AT A FAMOUS LANDMARK DOING SOMETHING CATCHY

USE CHAT GPT TO WRITE A PROMOTION IDEAS LIST

GET OUT INTO THE STREETS AND DO A VIDEO AT NIGHT UNDER NEON LIGHTS

FILM YOURSELF PERFORMING THE SONG IN A PLACE COMPLETELY OPPOSITE TO YOUR NORMAL ENVIRONMENT

BEING CREATIVE IS THE BOTTOM LINE NO MATTER WHAT YOU SING OR PERFORM

You have to come up with new ideas all of the time which is hard as you only want to be a musician or producer. I get it, but in today's world we have to be a bit of everything which can be overwhelming, but all of life is a struggle so why not struggle doing something you love as much as you can. You can also watch this hard hitting truthful video of what it takes to be in the music industry today.
